I was never a coffee drinker, it may sound very cliche but growing up in a British home I was always more of a tea drinker. For the longest time I didn’t even think that tea had caffeine in it, well it does and it’s no less addicting than coffee. Now, I know I said I wasn’t a coffee drinker but something happened about 20 months ago that changed all that… little miss ginger was born and unlike her big brother who literally slept 8 hours the first night he was born lil miss did not. If I got 3 hours of sleep in a row the first few months I would cry with happiness (that may have been the hormones).
Something that came along with those sleepless nights was sugar cravings. Every morning I would crave tea (1 sugar in it), coffee (1 sugar in it) and Nutella. (Nutella is basically kryptonite to nursing moms…betcha can’t eat just one jar) The less I slept the more coffee I drank. I was hooked. As the little one got older she started to sleep more (well, kinda) I didn’t like the feeling of waking up and ‘needing’ a coffee. I felt like the staff at my local Tim’s was starting to catch on to my 4 visits a day and worry for me. I needed to break this habit. I knew it wasn’t good for me so I started to read about giving it up.
Coffee does some seriously funky stuff like; reducing absorption of important minerals and vitamins like iron and zinc, which can compromise the immune system and make you more susceptible to sickness (colds, flu). I didn’t need sickness on top of not sleeping. Also, because of all the late night Nutella eating I started to think about shedding some off that baby weight. (p.s its a lie when they say nursing will make the weight fall off)
What to do? What to do? Of course! Drink more water… But the problem was at the time I wasn’t a huge fan so I went to Pinterest and looked for a way to spruce up my water! While I was at it I could add extra nutrients. I’d make fruit infused detox water! I started with just water and cucumber and when that started to get boring I went to the fruit bowl to see what crazy (yet tasty) concoctions I could come up with. Note: Banana water is not a good idea.
So did it work? Did I give up coffee for good and shed all the baby weight?
No, but it did take away the addiction and I started to crave water first thing in the morning. And a bonus? I could see my waste again. I also noticed a huge improvement in my skin, it was brighter and less dry. They hardly recognized me at Tim’s.
Below are a few of my fave’s, I’ve added some info about what these waters can do nutritionally because if we can all get vitamins and minerals in our drinks as well as our foods it may make us less likely to reach for that jar of Nutella.
//Blackberry+Lemon Water// Add together the water, a few blackberries and squeeze a few wedges of lemon.
Lemons have pectin fiber, which helps the suppression of hunger cravings making this a great mid-afternoon water.
Blackberries have wonderful antioxidant properties and are great for eye health. They can even improve vision.
//Lemon+Mint Water// Add a few slices of lemon with a few leaves of mint, I like mine with lots of mint.
Lemon provides your body with plenty of hydrating electrolytes in the form of potassium, calcium and magnesium. Who say’s you need milk?
Mint adds a touch of sweetness without the added sugar, it also helps settle your stomach and helps digestion.
//Peach+Strawberry+Mango Water// chop the strawberries, mango and peach and add to water with ice.
Peaches are often referred to as the ‘Fruit of Calmness’ making this a go to to when you are stressed out and in need of a spa day. No time for the spa? Run a bath, lock the door and put on Nora Jones or Sade. Heaven. Don’t forget the headphones.
Strawberries are packed with vitamins, minerals and other antioxidants they are excellent anti-aging weapons that help restore health to your skin, hair, and nails. They are the perfect sweetness too.
Mango aids in digestion and can help to flush a number of free radicals out of your body, aka the nasties you don’t want hanging out inside you.
The little gingers LOVED this one!
//Apple+Cinnamon Water// Cut up the apples and add a couple of sticks of cinnamon (or sprinkle some powered cinnamon) add to cold water.
This one might be my favourite, I love it because it tastes amazing first thing in the morning the cinnamon adds some warmth and and helps improve digestion which makes it a perfect for first thing in the morning.
