I made it! I’m finally writing my first post on the new site, I’m really really super excited to finally be here, although I have to admit I’m a bit annoyed at the same time. I’ve had a huge learning curve this week, changing over to a self-hosted site seemed like a great idea, but I was very naive and thought it would be quick and painless… I was wrong.
The reason I’m annoyed? Well, It was so much more work than I could of thought. I have (or had) little to no experience with self serving servers, SSL Certificates and multiple IP addresses (are you as lost as me?) so let me tell you in the last 8 days; I’ve cried, I’ve cheered, I’ve gone through all the emotions under the sun (sometimes within the same hour). Most of it over a chat with Bluehost rep. This kept me up very late and made for a very grumpy daytime mama (sorry little gingers). While I was “learning” my little Miss Ginger decided she didn’t like 7pm bedtime anymore and wanted to stay up till 11pm with me watching Peppa Pig and reading goodnight moon and eating popcorn. So as much as it was challenging I’m so happy with the outcome of the blog. It looks cool, calm and collected even if I wasn’t during it’s creation!
My point of this blog post? (other than to introduce my new site) is to say not to judge a book by its cover.
This experience really made me think about all the blogs, instagram accounts, pinterest boards, facebook walls that I follow. All of these amazing photos of people at their best, or finished products of amazing recipes and blogs. When you see it you can’t help but think “wow this person has really got it all together”. What you don’t see is all the hard work it takes for someone to create these amazing finished products. (I mean you know Kim K has a team working with her for all those Insta pics, right?)
Even this recipe stands true to this. I’ll give you an example; the popcorn recipe pictures I have attached to this blog today look good and I am really happy with the way they turned out. I would love to be able to say that after I made the 10 minute popcorn I took the photos in no time, edited them and threw them up on wordpress in a jiffy… but in reality it took me a few days with a few tiny speed bumps slowing me down. (sickness, kid’s not cooperating, overflowing the popcorn on the stove top all of the floor, etc)
The point being, we live in a time where all we see is the good stuff/the finished product we very rarely posts pictures of us at our worst. You don’t often see pictures of the crappy day we’ve been having or video’s of our kids having tantrums or Instagram the picture of the burnt food we made for dinner and ended up eating (who has time to re-make a lasagna?). What we show is the highlight reel, the amazing stuff, the cool, calm and collected stuff. It’s easier and more fun to show the positive and of course there’s nothing wrong with that it’s just important to take a second and remind ourselves that this is someone’s life through rose tinted glasses or lo-fi depending on the app.
So while you are enjoying everyone’s “highlight reel” on your favourite device you may as well have a little snack to enjoy with it! I’ve made a clean eating quick 10 minute popcorn recipe.
Grab a mouthful and take a picture with all that chocolatey goodness stuck in your teeth, while your at it please do judge this blog by its cover and let me know what you think of the new layout/design in the comment section below.
