When I first started this journey to a healthier diet, I had no idea where to begin. I knew I had to take small steps otherwise I’d just get fed up and throw in the towel. My naturopath had sent me out into the world with what seemed like a task too big to take on, completely changing the foods I ate daily and adding in things I’d never heard of (Collard greens??)
One of the first things she told me was to try and buy organic whenever possible, especially when it came to my fruits and veggies. I felt silly asking why so I went out and started my own research, what I found was scary! Very scary. One of the first things I came across was about pesticides, this is what I read:
“Pesticides are toxic. Different pesticides have been linked to a variety of health problems, including hormone disruption, cancer and brain toxicity”.
All of a sudden I felt like listening to this Natropathic doctor. (Even if she did just tell me I had to stop eating grilled cheese for breakfast lunch and dinner)
But where to begin? I couldn’t spend hundreds of dollars at Whole Foods on all new fruits and veggies, I was on a budget! This time I got on the computer and Googled “what food to buy organic + canada” and a list came up, it was from the David Suzuki’s website. THIS I could work with. The site states “Because organic foods tend to be more expensive than their counterparts, making informed choices in the produce aisle helps minimize pesticide consumption while keeping the budget in check!”
For example knowing that Avocado’s have a thick skin means that they do not need to be organic, as only a small percentage of pesticides can break through.
Still to this day when I write a shopping list I do my best to stick to the dirty dozen and clean fifteen. I mean do we really need our bodies to work even harder than they already do? Lets help out our insides a little and keep it clean.
This is something that I created that I could of really used when I first started. Print it off and take it with you the next time you go shopping. Canadian Clean 15 and Dirty Dozen:
